Assad, Russia escalate airstrikes on Hama countryside, 6 killed

Assad regime’s and Russia’s warplanes carried out on Saturday (April 28) heavy airstrikes on the city of Kafr Zeita in Hama northern countryside, in an unprecedented escalation.

At least 50 airstrikes targeted Kafr Zeita since the early hours of morning. Russian warplanes used bunker buster bombs to target the city’s hospital, bakery and the civil defense center, resulting in massive damage, Orient News correspondent Saif al-Abdullah reported.

Al-Abdullah also said that Russia’s fighter jets hit civilian-populated areas in a small village in Jabal Shahshabo area and that the destruction caused was huge as the strikes used bunker buster bombs.

Rescue volunteers of the White Helmets rushed to the attack site and started search and rescue operations, local sources told Orient Net. After hours-long work, they were able to remove 6 bodies from under the rubble, in addition to a number of injured civilians, the sources added.

Opposition’s military sources said that this escalation in aerial attacks on Hama northern countryside comes as a retaliation by Assad terrorists and their allied militias for the losses they suffered at the hands of opposition fighters during the fighting in the past three days in the surroundings of Tabiat al-Imam and Helfaya cities.

The sources also said that Assad terrorists and the Iraqi, Iranian and Lebanese foreign militias seek to make advances in Hama northern countryside to finally reach the town of Khan Sheikhoun in Idlib southern countryside in order to destroy any evidence regarding latest chemical attack by Assad regime on the town.

Observers say that during the last couple of weeks, Hama northern countryside witnessed more than 3,000 airstrikes, using different types of internationally-prohibited ammunition.
