U.S. strike has changed everything in Syria policy: opposition figure
Samir Nashar

Samir Nashar, former member of the National Coalition, said the U.S. policy towards the Syrian opposition has made fundamental change after the deadly chemical attack on Khan Sheikhoun on April 4.

In a statement to Zaman al-Wasl, Nashar said that the shift in International and regional positions was evident in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries supporting the new US position. Also, the European position which announced its unequivocal support for any action contemplated in Syria and even outside of the Security Council.

Not all countries are enthused by the shifting international approach as some countries such as Egypt are closer to Russia and Iran. He pointed out that the United States will try to win the Russian position by motivating them with promises to maintain their interests in Syria.

Regarding the sixth round of Geneva Talks, Nashar suggested that Geneva 6 would try to return to the Geneva 1 statement which dictates the formation of a transitional governing body with full executive powers in accordance with the regime and the opposition.

In the event this is executed, al-Assad will have no authority or role in the transitional period nor in the future of Syria. He indicated that the US position is closer to the position of the Syrian revolution regarding a political solution than ever before.

Regarding the leaked American plan to remove al-Assad over four stages, Nashar explained that such a plan is not far from the discussion that took place between Tillerson, Lavrov and Putin. He believes that it reflects the trends and pressures on various regional or international fronts.

Nashar said that the political opposition is ready, but fundamentally lacks a military advisory council formed of high ranking dissident officers with the expertise and competence for political and military complementary to be achieved. He deemed this necessary as the proposed solution involves the regime, without al-Assad, to command the security and military institutions which will try to impose a ceasefire, impose security, stabilize the situation, and unify efforts to fight terrorism
