Trump set to speak with Putin, Syria expected to be on agenda

US President Donald Trump will speak with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin by telephone on Tuesday, the White House said in a statement.

There was no indication about the topics of discussion for the call, which was scheduled for 12.30 pm (4.30pm UK time).

However, the Assad war on Syrians and Mr Putin’s continued backing of Bashar Assad loom large after Mr Trump ordered an airstrike near the western city of Homs last month.

Russia denied Assad regime was responsible for the Sarin attack, after which Mr Trump said US-Russian relations "may be at an all-time low".

Mr Trump has already spoken by telephone twice with the Russian leader since taking office.

On January 28, the two men discussed how to defeat the ISIS in a congratulatory call from Putin, according to officials.
