Heavy clashes are under way between Syria’s southern rebels and the army's elite Fourth Armored Division at the eastern gate of Daraa city, rebel task command said.
Al Bunyan al-Marsous, the operation room of key armed factions in southern Syria, said rebels have blockaded units from Fourth Armored Division east of Daraa Camp, according to statement posted online.
The regime backed by Iran and Shi'ite militias has stepped up its air and artillery bombardments on Daraa after a two-day ceasefire expired and despite U.S. and Russian talks on creating a "de-escalation zone" in southwestern Syria that would include Daraa.
On Tuesday, Al Bunyan al-Marsous launched a surprise attack on the strategic base in the Old City of Daraa that connects between the eastern and western countryside.
If the army takes rebel-held parts of Daraa and the few kilometers (miles) between it and the border, it would split the insurgent areas of southeast Syria in half.
