PYD competes with regime in buying grain in Hasaka

Reporting by Ammar Johmani

Harvesting of the wheat crop was nearing completion in the Hasaka province more than a week after its launch, while the recurrence of fire incidents worried farmers whose fields were still waiting for the harvesters to enter.

Mr. Ibrahim, a farmer from the village of Abah, reported that farmers in the area were close to ending wheat harvesting, which began early this month, with barley and rainfed crops. Production rates varied from one field to another depending on the ability of each farmer to provide fertilizer and fuel to irrigate the crop over the past three months.

He added that the production ranges between 30 and 40 bags of wheat per hectare , equivalent to 3-4 tons, considering that the weight of the bag about 100 kg more or less, noting that the price of empty bag empty is 840 SP, while using a lot of Farmers bags (Nylon) price of 110 SP for bags that were previously used to store straw, and 125 SP for the slightly better Turkish type.

The farmer said that the harvesters, either from the Ayn al-Arab or local area determined the prices of the harvest with a percentage of production 5% of the production of the field, which is estimated that the harvester is good, or about 1500-2000 SP per acre for the bad fields and therefore weak in production. The farmer pointed out that the farmers are worried from another fire in the fields before harvesting it due to the flames of the harvester that causes the fire sometimes. Farmer Abdi Saeed lost the area of 300 acres in the village of Um Ushaba as a result of a fire a few days ago in this way.

The fire destroyed hundreds of acres of wheat in Tal Shaer in al-Qamishli, Asadiya in Ras al-Ayn and Tal Jehan in Malakiya, according to activist Mahmoud al-Ahmad.

Al-Ahmad said that the fire fighters, which are supposed to have been on alert during the harvest, failed in extinguishing any fire, but the residents are quick to help the owners of the fields to extinguish the fire with simple means, including farming around the fire with tractors.

The activist explained that the regime has set the price of barley at 110 SP / 1 kg compared to 140 SP for wheat in the case of marketing to grain receiving centers in regime-controlled areas in Qamishli. On the other hand, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) administration is trying to compete with the government of the regime by buying wheat from farmers at 143 SP in the Malikya area and stored in the Tal Adas, Kratchuk and Malakya grain centers.

Al-Ahmad pointed out that large quantities of wheat are sold to traders and do not know their destination after that, reflecting the state of competition for buying wheat, especially after grain shrinking in its areas in the province in favor of growing aromatic and medicinal crop.

According to the director of the branch of the General Establishment for Grain Trade and Manufacturing in al-Qamishli, marketed quantities by the farmers of al-Hasakah province to Jeremez center livestock centers to market the grain in al-Qamishli city since the start of marketing operations reached 22048 tons (a third of the expected production of 600 thousand tons).

State news agency SANA reported off the director of the branch of the institution Obeida al-Ali that the average daily marketing rose to the two centers in the amount of 5 to 6 thousand tons and he expected an increase in marketed quantities during the next week in conjunction with the continuation of harvesting operations.
