Cerebral Palsy deprives Sham from her childhood

In abandoned tent in Zaatari refugee Camp, Sham Morjan has being suffering from cerebral palsy since her birth. Sham, the little girl of 6 years, seems younger than her age after she stopped growing, talking and moving and practicing her childhood like her peers.

Three years ago, Sham took refuge with her family from Jassim city in rural Daraa. Her father, who works as a laborer in an agricultural project outside the camp, told Ammar Johmani that his daughter was born with cerebral palsy and at the beginning of her birth, she did not see her eyes.

He pointed out that he showed her to more than one ophthalmologist but they said she needs a neurologist and after four months he automatically looked back at her, but - he says - she could not move, speak or walk.

After that, Sham was presented to the neurologist who confirmed Sham has spider-like bag which will be removed by itself after she grows. He added that he did RMI for Sham and according to the report it confirms she has fiber around the brain, pointing out that doctors confirmed there is no treatment for this case in Syria and neighboring countries and that its only treatment is available in European countries.

At that time, her doctor promised to send her for treatment to one of these countries, but the war prevented and the spread of the regime barriers between Damascus and Daraa.

After his arrival in Jordan, Morjan showed his child to doctors at the Moroccan hospital in Zaatari camp. They gave him vague medical reports, headaches and painkillers, and he said to his child took physiotherapy without any benefit and without asking him for an X-ray. Cat scan or RMI required to detect this case.

Sham’s mother intervened to tell us that she had gone to the mentioned hospital and took with her cat scan of Sham’s head and medical reports she had brought from Syria. She was surprised that one of the doctors said that Sham has blockage in the arteries without a check up and he asked her to go see UNHCR-medical department which refused to accept the cat scan and asked for new diagnosis for Sham’s case on the expense of the family knowing that it costs quite a lot.

Sham’s father confirmed that he showed her to hospitals and doctors in Syria when he had money but after he took refuge in Jordan, he was not able to take her to doctors, adding that he suffers from the costs of taking care of his child due to her special needs from diapers, milk, medications and other needs.

Sham’s pointed out that he is forced to sell half of the food coupons received from UNHCR to meet the needs of Sham.
