Dozens of vehicles belonging to the United States have withdrawn from the areas controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in al-Hasakah in northeastern Syria to northern Iraq.

Enab Baladi‘s correspondent in al-Hasakah reported that dozens of armored vehicles and trucks carrying logistical equipment withdrew from al-Hasakah towards Iraq via the al-Walid border crossing north of al-Yarubiyah.

According to estimates, the number of vehicles is 150, including heavy equipment and support materials.

This comes after the United States began withdrawing soldiers and military equipment from bases where they had been stationed for years in Syria.

On April 17, the American newspaper “The New York Times” reported, citing unnamed American officials, that the US military has begun closing three of its small military bases in northeastern Syria.

It added that the United States started withdrawing hundreds of troops from the area, reflecting the changing security environment in the country since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024.

The American newspaper reported that the US military will close three of its operational bases in Syria, which will reduce the number of US forces from 2,000 to about 1,400 soldiers.

The US withdrawal included the Mission Support Site Green Village (Conoco Field), the Euphrates Site (Al-Omar Field), and a third much smaller facility not mentioned by the newspaper.

The officials told the newspaper that after 60 days, American leaders would reassess the possibility of further reductions, and US commanders recommended keeping at least 500 US soldiers in Syria, according to one official.

In February, the American network “NBC News” reported that the Department of Defense (Pentagon) had made plans for a complete withdrawal from Syria within a period ranging from 30 to 90 days.

The network stated that President Donald Trump and officials close to him expressed interest in withdrawing US forces from Syria, which prompted the Pentagon to develop withdrawal plans within 30, 60, or 90 days.

The network quoted two officials at the Pentagon saying that the ministry is working on plans to withdraw all US forces from Syria.

At the end of January, Trump mentioned that he would make a decision regarding the presence of US forces in Syria and, in response to a question about his intention to withdraw his country’s forces from Syria, said, “I don’t know who said that, but we will make a decision on that.”
