On Sunday, July 13, the General Intelligence Directorate under Syria’s Ministry of Interior arrested a suspect in Homs province who was found in possession of several ready-to-use improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

According to a statement posted on the Ministry’s official Facebook page, the arrest followed a “preemptive” security operation conducted in cooperation with the Internal Security Command in Homs. Authorities said the suspect had been tracked and monitored prior to the arrest.

The ministry reported that the suspect intended to carry out “terrorist” operations in Homs using the explosives. Initial investigations indicated that the detainee was linked to a cell affiliated with Lebanon’s Hezbollah. It was also revealed that the explosives were smuggled through illegal border crossings.

The IEDs were confiscated, and the suspect was referred to the competent judiciary for legal proceedings, the ministry added.

This operation is part of the Interior Ministry’s broader efforts to arrest war criminals who collaborated with the former regime in crimes committed against Syrians over the past 14 years. The ministry emphasized its aim to deliver justice and support victims.

Earlier, on July 8, the Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of a former officer in the Syrian regime’s army, accused of committing violations against civilians. In a statement, the ministry said the Internal Security Directorate in the Talkalakh area of Homs countryside apprehended Brigadier General Riyad Hamdo al-Shehada.

Shehada previously served as head of the Political Security Branch in Damascus under the former regime and is accused of numerous war crimes against civilians.

On July 7, the Interior Ministry carried out a separate security operation in the city of Al-Bukamal and its surrounding countryside in Deir ez-Zor province, targeting the “47th Regiment,” affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The operation led to the arrest of more than 50 individuals wanted for various charges, including illegal arms possession and trafficking, drug promotion, and endangering public safety.

Colonel Derrar al-Shamlan, head of Internal Security in Deir ez-Zor, stated that several members of the 47th Regiment linked to the IRGC were among those detained.
