After a period of calm in the governorate, Ministry of Defense forces came under attack by ‘regime remnants’ on June 6, 2025 (Latakia governorate).

A Syrian army vehicle was attacked by groups described as ‘remnants of the regime’ in the Latakia countryside, after a recent period of calm.

In a statement published by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on August 14, the Ministry of Defense said that the vehicle was targeted in Latakia’s countryside by what it called “remnants of the defunct regime.” The attack caused no human casualties.

The ministry noted that the past three days have witnessed an escalation in assaults carried out by these groups, targeting army forces in the rural areas of Latakia and Tartus.

It reaffirmed its commitment to “fulfilling its duty to protect all components of the Syrian people and preserve civil peace,” stressing that it would not tolerate any attack against its forces or civilians, while warning the “remnants of the defunct regime” against attempts to destabilize security and stability in Syria’s coastal region.

According to SANA, the coast has recently experienced a period of stability after the deployment of additional army and public security units in rural and border areas, as part of “ongoing efforts to eliminate remnants of the defunct regime who sought to spread chaos and instability.”

Noor al-Din Primo, head of media relations in Latakia governorate, told Enab Baladi that the security situation in the governorate is “very good” aside from the incident that targeted the Ministry of Defense vehicle in Latakia countryside yesterday.

He added that military positions have been reinforced, with heightened alert levels and increased mobile patrols across the governorate, in order to “secure the area, protect residents and civil peace, and prevent any attempts to disrupt security.”

The Ministry of Interior periodically announces the arrest of individuals it accuses of belonging to “regime remnants” in connection with the coastal events” that erupted in March.

The coastal cities of Tartus and Latakia witnessed bloody incidents beginning on March 6, sparked by movements of regime loyalists from the former era.

According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), the violence resulted in 803 deaths, including members of public security forces and civilians killed by fighters affiliated with pro-government factions, citing sectarian motives.

A national fact-finding committee was formed after the coastal events and presented its findings during a conference attended by Enab Baladi on July 22.

The committee identified individuals accused of committing violations during the incidents, including 265 fighters from armed groups it linked to the “remnants of Assad,” in addition to 298 members of military factions who allegedly disobeyed orders and are suspected of committing abuses against civilians.

The committee verified the deaths of 1,426 people, including 90 women, the majority of them civilians, along with some former military personnel who had reconciled with the authorities.

While acknowledging that some of the dead may have belonged to regime remnants, the committee concluded that most killings occurred outside of, or after, the military clashes had ended.
