Stanford University’s global ranking included five researchers from the University of Damascus among the world’s top 2% of scientists for 2025. The ranking, published in late September, is one of the most prestigious measures of research quality and international impact, according to Mustafa Saem Aldaher, President of the University of Damascus, who spoke to Enab Baladi.
The ranking is carried out in cooperation with the scientific publisher Elsevier and is considered a key benchmark for measuring the quality and influence of academic work.
Saem Aldaher explained that the overall list featured ten Syrian researchers recognized for their impactful and reliable scientific contributions across physics, medicine, engineering, and modern technologies.
From the University of Damascus, the five recognized scholars are:

Marwan Al-Raeei – Faculty of Science, specializing in complexity theory, with notable research in physics and astronomy.

Bilal Zaarour – Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, recognized for his work in enabling and strategic technologies. His listing was in collaboration with the International University for Science and Technology.

Sariya Sweid – Medical student, Faculty of Human Medicine, specializing in clinical medicine, whose research is also linked with the University of Aleppo.

Loai Aljerf – Technical staff member at the Faculty of Science, specializing in environmental chemistry, with additional contributions in clinical medicine.

Jamil Ghojel – Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, recognized for his varied engineering research.
The University President described the recognition as a scientific achievement that enhances the academic and research record of Damascus University. He emphasized that having five of its researchers included in such a ranking demonstrates the quality of the university’s scientific output and its standing locally and internationally.
He added that the university administration is committed to supporting researchers and students by fostering an environment that encourages innovation and excellence, ultimately serving the development of knowledge and society.
According to Saem Aldaher, this accomplishment highlights Damascus University’s path toward solidifying its role as a pioneering academic and research institution, combining scientific innovation with social responsibility, and becoming one of the few Syrian universities capable of competing in global rankings.
What is the Stanford Ranking?
Since 2019, Stanford University has prepared a comprehensive list of the top 2% of scientists worldwide based on strict and reliable criteria. The ranking gained wide attention due to its annual updates and its expanding role in evaluating scientists globally, in cooperation with Elsevier.
It relies on analyzing scientific and statistical data using citation records from the Scopus database. Several indicators are applied, including the number of citations (c-score), the ranking of journals where researchers publish, and the frequency of references to their work. The methodology also accounts for geographic distribution and scientific diversity, ensuring broad representation of pioneering research worldwide.
The list also tracks scientists’ professional careers, following their research achievements, publications, and long-term developments, offering insight into the continuity and influence of their work over time.
