Several Arab states condemned the two bombings that targeted the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Tuesday, July 7, injuring several police officers and civilians.

Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed AlBudaiwi condemned the “terrorist attack” that targeted Damascus and injured security personnel and civilians as security authorities were attempting to dismantle two explosive devices planted by a “terrorist” cell.

AlBudaiwi affirmed the GCC’s rejection of all forms of terrorism and extremism, stressing the need for regional and international efforts to unite to eliminate terrorism and dry up its sources, in a way that strengthens security and stability and preserves the security and safety of states.

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned the two bombings that took place in Damascus, affirming its full rejection of all forms of violence and terrorism and its support for Syria in confronting anything that targets its security and stability.

For its part, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the attack and renewed the kingdom’s categorical rejection of all terrorist and extremist acts that seek to destabilize the security and stability of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Jordan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates also condemned the two “terrorist” bombings.

The ministry’s official spokesperson, Ambassador Fuad al-Majali, affirmed the kingdom’s support for and solidarity with the government and people of the Syrian Arab Republic, reiterating Jordan’s position in support of Syria’s security, stability, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its citizens.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced its condemnation of the two bombings, affirming its full solidarity with Syria and its support for all measures Syria takes to preserve security and stability.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press statement, condemned “in the strongest terms” the “terrorist” bombings carried out using several explosive devices, which targeted Damascus and injured several citizens.

The Iraqi ministry said the acts, which it described as “criminal,” represent a flagrant violation of civilians’ security and stability and aim to undermine security and stability in the Syrian Arab Republic. It renewed Iraq’s firm and established position rejecting all forms of terrorism, extremism, and violence, whatever their motives or justifications.

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs also denounced the “criminal” act that targeted Syria’s security and stability, affirming Kuwait’s support for the Syrian Arab Republic in all measures it takes to preserve its security, stability, and the safety of its people.

Two Explosions in Damascus

The Syrian Ministry of Interior said 18 people, including four police officers, were injured after two explosions occurred in central Damascus today, Tuesday, July 7.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Damascus reported that the two explosions occurred near the site where French President Emmanuel Macron is staying in Damascus. The first took place near al-Naanaa Garage in the al-Halbouni area, close to the Ministry of Tourism, and the second near the Four Seasons Hotel. Several people were injured, including members of the Road Security Police.

The Ministry of Interior told SANA that Internal Security forces detected two explosive devices during field operations. Specialized units began taking the necessary measures to dismantle them, but the devices exploded while preparations for the dismantling operation were underway.

The ministry said an initial inspection showed that the two devices had been made in a primitive manner. The first was placed inside a car parked on the side of the road, while the second was placed inside a garbage container. Investigations are still underway to uncover the circumstances of the attack and identify those involved.

Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba said security authorities foiled an attempt to target the security cordon assigned to protect French President Emmanuel Macron during his official visit to Damascus, stressing that the explosive devices detonated at the edges of the security cordon and were unable to breach it.

Speaking at a press conference at the bombing site, attended by Enab Baladi, al-Baba said investigations had reached an “initial lead” pointing to the perpetrators of the two bombings. He said preliminary information indicated that the explosive devices were planted only minutes before the explosions, not long beforehand, stressing that work is continuing to pursue those involved and arrest them.
