The Syrian General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport said final approval has not yet been granted for regular direct flights between Berlin and Damascus, after information circulated that the route would begin operating in August.
The authority said on Facebook that completing procedures to operate the route remains tied to obtaining the necessary regulatory and operational approvals from the relevant authorities in Germany, as well as completing the technical procedures followed by both sides under the governing legal frameworks.
It confirmed that no final operational approval has been issued so far for regular flights between Berlin and Damascus, noting that talks with the relevant German authorities are still ongoing to complete the required procedures.
The authority said it would announce any developments or approved operating dates once the official procedures are completed and final approval is granted.
The clarification came after information circulated about the launch of direct flights between Damascus and Berlin starting in August, following the appearance of scheduled flights between the two cities on the booking application of the German company Sundair.
Talks to Restore Flights Between Syria and Germany
Omar Hosari, head of the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport, announced on X that progress had been made in ongoing talks with the relevant authorities in Germany over lifting the ban on flights between the two countries.
Hosari said that, based on official correspondence and technical understandings between the General Authority of Civil Aviation and Air Transport in Syria and the relevant German authorities, positive indications had been received regarding progress in procedures to lift the ban.
According to Hosari, the authority is awaiting a final decision from the relevant authorities in the Federal Republic of Germany during the first half of next month, paving the way for the resumption of direct flights between Syria and Germany after years of suspension.
Hosari also said the authority is preparing to visit Germany in the coming period to complete technical and legal talks and sign a bilateral air transport agreement between the two countries. He said the agreement would establish an organized and lasting framework for cooperation in air transport and strengthen travel, economic, and commercial exchange.
The authority is also continuing to work with several other European countries to complete the procedures needed to restore direct flights, according to Hosari, who said some of these talks have reached their final stages, with positive results expected to be announced soon.
Flights Between Damascus and Amsterdam to Resume
The head of the authority also revealed that the final steps with the relevant authorities have been completed in preparation for launching direct flights between Damascus and Amsterdam.
Hosari said that, after years of suspension, Syrian Airlines will fly again toward Europe through direct flights between Damascus and Amsterdam, in a step that reflects Syria’s gradual return to the regional and international air transport network, according to his statement.
He added that, in light of progress achieved at the technical, legal, and regulatory levels, final procedures are being completed this week with the relevant authorities in preparation for launching flights during the first week of next month.
Hosari confirmed that the Amsterdam route represents the beginning of a broader path of expansion in destinations, noting that work is continuing to launch new routes in the coming period.
