The Israeli army said its forces killed a number of “armed men” in the security zone in southern Syria.

The Israeli army’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, said on X today, Sunday, 28 June, that forces from Division 210 killed on Saturday a number of people he described as “armed men” in the “defensive security zone” in southern Syria.

He added that the Israeli army would continue operating in the “defensive security zone” to remove any threat to Israeli citizens and Israeli army forces, according to his statement.

Adraee did not provide further details about the operation, including the number of people killed or its exact location, and did not accuse the armed men of belonging to any specific organization.

Enab Baladi has not found any indicators or information about the operation announced by Israel.

Israel has advanced into southern Syria since 8 December 2024 and has established several military bases, most of them in Quneitra (southern Syria), in addition to one base in western rural Daraa.

Reports indicate that Israeli forces control 235 square kilometers of the buffer zone separating the occupied Syrian Golan from Syrian territory. They also have freedom of movement across Quneitra governorate, southwestern rural Daraa, and part of Rural Damascus governorate adjacent to Quneitra.

The Israeli army carries out incursions, arrests, house searches, and land leveling operations, and sets up checkpoints that cut off villages and towns from one another.

Israel refuses to withdraw from Syrian territory, citing security pretexts to prevent a scenario similar to what happened during Operation al-Aqsa Flood in Gaza, according to its statements.

Damascus is demanding that Israel withdraw from southern Syria and return to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement signed between the two sides, while stressing its rejection of military solutions as it focuses on rebuilding a country devastated by the war it has experienced over the past years.

Previous Israeli Targeting

The Israeli army announced on 10 February that it had carried out an operation to dismantle a weapons storage facility belonging to the Islamic Group, a Lebanese movement, in the Beit Jinn area of southern Syria.

The Israeli army added in a post on X that its forces found and dismantled various weapons at the facility, including rifles, landmines, and communication equipment.

Thirteen civilians, including women and children, were also killed, and 24 others were injured, after the Israeli army shelled the town of Beit Jinn (Rif Dimashq, southern Syria) on 28 November 2025, while six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the clashes.

The shelling followed an Israeli army incursion into the town to arrest a number of young men, which led to clashes between young men from the town and the Israeli army.

Israeli accounts differed at the time over the identity of those involved. Israel initially said the targets belonged to the Islamic Group, then later accused Syrian intelligence of involvement in the attacks.

The Israeli army spokesperson said forces from Brigade 55, under Division 210, arrested three people linked to the Islamic Group in southern Syria. During the operation, a close-range clash took place with those he described as “terrorists,” leaving three soldiers seriously wounded and three others with varying injuries.

The Islamic Group in Lebanon expressed surprise that Israel had involved its name in what it called the Israeli “attack” on the Syrian town of Beit Jinn, denying Israeli accusations that it had carried out any activities in the town.

According to a statement published on its website at the time, the Islamic Group rejected the inclusion of its name in any actions unrelated to it, denying the existence of any activity by the group outside Lebanon.

It also condemned the “Israeli attack” on Beit Jinn and its peaceful residents, and offered condolences to the families of the town’s victims.

The group affirmed its commitment to what the Lebanese state had committed to in the ceasefire agreement with Israel, noting that it operates under the “authority of law and institutions.”
