The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned Israeli incursions into Syrian territory in the governorates of Daraa and Quneitra, along with artillery shelling that targeted areas in southern Syria, considering the operations a “flagrant violation” of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In a statement issued at dawn on Monday, June 29, the ministry said the attacks constitute a breach of international law, the United Nations Charter, and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, noting that they terrorized civilians in the targeted areas.
The ministry added that the continued attacks undermine efforts to consolidate security and stability, deepen civilian suffering, and warn of further escalation in the region. It called on the United Nations and the international community to shoulder their responsibilities and take measures to stop repeated violations and ensure respect for the Disengagement Agreement in a way that preserves Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Shelling Targets Abdin Village
The Foreign Ministry’s statement followed Israeli forces’ targeting of Abdin village and its surroundings in western rural Daraa (southern Syria) with artillery shells and helicopter fire on the evening of Sunday, June 28, amid Israeli warplane and helicopter flights over the countryside of Daraa and Quneitra.
The official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that the shelling in Abdin village caused damage to agricultural land and the area surrounding the village, without recording human casualties. The fear that accompanied the shelling pushed several residents to flee toward neighboring towns and villages.
Ahmed al-Hajer, commander of Civil Defense operations at the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in southern Syria, said the Israeli shelling did not cause injuries among civilians, but created a state of panic that drove several families to leave the village.
Civil Defense teams worked to transport the families and secure their needs, as Israeli drones continued flying over the area.
Escalation in the Yarmouk Basin
An Israeli military patrol of four vehicles advanced on Sunday afternoon, June 28, into the village of Abidin in the Yarmouk Basin area of western rural Daraa (southern Syria), adjacent to the occupied Syrian Golan.
Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that members of the patrol opened indiscriminate fire and set up military checkpoints in the area, prompting residents to gather.
United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) personnel attempted to intervene, but the patrol did not respond before withdrawing to the nearby Tal al-Maghar site.
Israeli forces had seized Tal al-Maghar, a former Syrian regime military position, and established a base there, linking it to the al-Jazira barracks by opening a military road after occupying the area on the eve of the regime’s fall on December 8, 2024.
Another Israeli force also advanced into the village of Jamlah in western rural Daraa, where it set up checkpoints and opened fire, cutting the road between the towns of Jamlah and Abidin.
According to the correspondent, the move marked the first public daytime incursion by Israeli forces in the area, after previous movements had been limited to periodic night incursions.
