
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry explained that the talks will address political, security, economic, and trade issues, as well as regional and international developments, and mechanisms to strengthen coordination and consultation between Baghdad and Damascus in facing shared challenges, in a way that supports security and stability in the region.
Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Minister Asaad al-Shaibani received his Iraqi counterpart and the accompanying delegation at Tishreen Palace in Damascus, stressing that the visit comes as part of discussions on cooperation in various fields and strengthening bilateral relations between Syria and Iraq.
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Minister Fuad Hussein arrived in Damascus in response to an official invitation from the Syrian foreign minister, and is scheduled to hold a series of meetings with senior Syrian officials to discuss ways to develop bilateral relations and enhance joint cooperation.
Political, Security, and Economic Cooperation
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry explained that the talks will address political, security, economic, and trade files, as well as developments in regional and international affairs, and mechanisms to strengthen coordination and consultation between Baghdad and Damascus in facing shared challenges, in a way that supports security and stability in the region.
It added that the two sides will discuss developing mechanisms for bilateral cooperation to serve the common interests of both countries and strengthen regional stability amid the political and security shifts in the region.
For his part, the Iraqi foreign minister commented on the visit on his X account, saying he had arrived in the Syrian Arab Republic on an official visit at the invitation of his Syrian counterpart, Asaad al-Shaibani.
Hussein added that the visit will include discussions on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and develop political, security, economic, and trade cooperation, along with consultations on regional and international developments.
He affirmed that Iraq believes dialogue and coordination among countries in the region represent the most important path to strengthening security and stability and serving common interests, considering regional cooperation a foundation for consolidating security and stability in the region.
Diplomatic Activity Continues
According to Syrian al-Ikhbariya, the visit falls within the continued political communication between Damascus and Baghdad, and the ongoing coordination on a number of files of mutual interest, in addition to expanding cooperation in the political, security, economic, and trade fields.
It added that, through this visit, the two sides seek to support efforts aimed at strengthening security and stability and developing bilateral relations between the two countries across various sectors.
Fuad Hussein’s visit comes as a continuation of reciprocal diplomatic activity between the two countries, following Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani’s visit to the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on 14 March 2025.
During that visit, al-Shaibani met Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and former Speaker of Parliament Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, and discussed with them prospects for developing bilateral relations and strengthening coordination on political, security, and economic files of mutual interest.
Coordination to Face Regional Challenges
The current visit reflects the continuation of official contacts between Damascus and Baghdad at a stage marked by political and regional changes, amid shared interest in strengthening security coordination, especially on files related to border security and confronting common challenges.
It also comes as part of the two countries’ efforts to develop economic and trade cooperation and strengthen channels of dialogue and consultation on regional and international issues, in a way that serves common interests and supports security and stability in the region, according to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry and the Syrian Foreign and Expatriates Ministry.
