Syrian army forces have begun entering Tishrin Dam east of Aleppo province, under an agreement signed between the Syrian Ministry of Defense and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that previously controlled the area.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported today, Saturday, April 12, that the Syrian army and security forces from the Ministry of Interior have started entering Tishrin Dam in the eastern Aleppo countryside.

It added that the army’s entrance to the area aims to impose security and stability there, in accordance with the agreement reached with the SDF.

For its part, the local channel “Alyawm” stated that a delegation from the International Coalition and the Syrian government has arrived at Tishrin Dam in northern Syria.

It added, quoting its correspondent in the area via a video recording, that the delegation arrived at the dam under security escort and protection from the SDF.

Additionally, the Kurdish channel “Ronahi” reported that a delegation from the International Coalition entered Tishrin Dam and then left shortly after, without providing further details.

The SDF has not officially announced its withdrawal from the area or its handover to the Syrian Ministry of Defense as of the moment this news article was released.

About a week ago, SANA reported that maintenance teams had entered Tishrin Dam near the city of Manbij to begin repairs in preparation for its resumption of operation.

The Tishrin Dam area has witnessed battles between the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), which later joined the Syrian Ministry of Defense, and the SDF since the beginning of this year.

The fighting continued for months, even after the agreement between the SDF commander, Mazloum Abdi, and the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, but it recently ceased due to understandings between Turkey and the United States, according to a statement from Ilham Ahmed, an official in the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

This change in control over the dam comes under the al-Sharaa-Abdi agreement signed last March, under which the People’s Protection Units (YPG) affiliated with the SDF withdrew from the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh neighborhoods in Aleppo.

In his first comment on the historic agreement of integrating the SDF under the Syrian Ministry of Defense, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi wrote via his account on X on March 11, “In this sensitive period, we are working together to ensure a transitional phase that reflects the aspirations of our people for justice and stability.”

He added, “We are committed to building a better future that guarantees the rights of all Syrians and meets their aspirations for peace and dignity. We consider this agreement a real opportunity to build a new Syria that embraces all its components and ensures good neighborliness.”
